Abstract

A blue, red, yellow oilcloth jumping jack. Crack closure and filling in of defects in oilcloth
The little jumping jack in the primary colours blue, red, yellow had been handmade of given oilcloth leftovers in the 1940s. Oilcloth is a tissue with an appropriate oil paint coating. After 60 years the little doll showed clear traces of use and ageing. Arms and legs were affected in particular, probably due to playing with the doll, revealing numerous cracks and defects in the coating as well as in the backing fabric. Restoration was urgently required. The framework of a diploma thesis at the HTW Berlin in 2009 offered the possibility of developing methods of closing cracks in and the filling-in of defects in oilcloth. The result is that cracks and damage of the textile support could be closed by a polyamide gauze without creating tension. Furthermore, the defects in the coating were successfully complemented. Due to the low thickness of the oil paint coating, the direct application of the acrylic resin dispersion Lascaux® 498 HV proved to be preferable to the use of inlays.
