Abstract
Light protection concepts in the Bavarian Palace Administration. A practical report
Light protection measures have a long tradition in Bavarian castles and palaces. Since the end of the monarchy, the buildings have been used as museums. The permanent exhibition in unfiltered daylight has worsened the preservation conditions for the historic interiors. Not least because of the damage that has occurred, the need for light protection measures has come into focus for all those responsible. Developing a light protection policy for historic interior museums in the heritage context is a very complex challenge, since a multitude of interdisciplinary demands must be taken into account. Individual light protection measures are developed after considering all requirements. Based on many years of experience, a combination of UV-protective adhesive foil and dark screen has become established as the norm. Various disciplines must be taken into account when choosing the degree of transmission and the level of darkening, as well as the long-term effects of the measures adopted. The professional decisions need to be communicated to staff and public. This is the only way to achieve a broad acceptance of the light protection measures and set a high standard for the future.
