Abstract

Snow White’s coffin – a large display case for the Heiltumsschrein
For the new permanent exhibition “Images of the Middle Ages” at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum the shrine of the imperial regalia (“Heiltumsschrein”), which is decorated with silver plates and gilded-brass mouldings, was investigated technologically, cleaned, and installed in a newly developed display case made of steel and glass. The case is more than three meters high and holds the shrine freely suspended from the ceiling. It allows presentation of the object in a non-climatized exhibition space without applying preventive coatings to the silverplates.
