Abstract
Consolidation of a paint layer by means of aerosol in a late medieval gunsmith master book (Bavarian State Library Munich, Cgm 600)
The contribution describes the practical approach for the consolidation of a powdery red paint layer in, an illuminated manuscript on early artillery science from the first quarter of the fifteenth-century. On the basis of an exact damage analysis a restoration concept was developed and aerosol fastening was selected as a suitable consolidation technique. The practical execution of the consolidation with the employment of a combination of units, including an ultrasound mister, dosing unit and compressor made it possible to fasten the paint layer very carefully and surely. Further aids, e.g. masks were used in this case. After conclusion of all conservation work on the manuscript, intermediate layer sheets were inserted as a preventive measure for the avoidance of future damage by abrasion.
