Abstract

Eighteenth and nineteenth century “flip images”. Making a flip image following an instruction from 1759, and another one after an original of c. 1850
Slatted pictures are "flip images" of the Middle Ages and were produced until the 19th century, especially in South Germany. One used the simplest optical illusion: the change of perspective. It was therefore possible to visualise two or three different motifs in only one picture. With the viewer standing in the front of the picture, the main subject could be seen in the background. If he changed his position by about 45 degrees to the left or the right, the second and finally the third motif became visible. This phenomenon was investigated as part of the lecture “Art Technological Project” at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (Dresden University of Fine Arts) and two replicas based on historical models and instructions were made.
