Abstract

Pulp for closing wide tears – a report from the workbench

In conservation wide clefts in canvas paintings have always been difficult to treat. There are two basic methods the conservator can choose: contract the canvas with stretchers and then glue the threads or leave the cleft as is and insert a canvas inlay. In our case neither of the two methods could be applied due to the extreme fragility of the canvas. Experiments with fibrous pulp as a method of closing the cleft have been carried out successfully during a practice term.
