Abstract

Liselotte Pulver’s 1953 Studebaker Champion – Restoration and Conservation of Car Paint
Within the framework of a 2007 diploma thesis at Bern University of the Arts, the difficulty of partial restoration of monochrome car paint has been illustrated using the vintage car owned by the Swiss actress Liselotte Pulver as an example. The history of the Studebaker firm as a traditional American car company, its model “Champion Starliner” as a mass product and design object, and the history of the car in question were researched; the car was assessed according to international criteria applicable to vintage automobiles. The damage to the paintwork was documented and each paint layer analyzed using different methods; thus the history of each paint layer could be reconstructed. The restoration concept thereby obtained was realized.
