Abstract

Large-format removed mural paintings from the former Dominican monastery St. Pauli in Leipzig. Historical preservation, conservation and reinstallation in a newly erected university wing
The mural paintings from the former Dominican monastery of St. Pauli, removed from their original location over 100 years ago, are of great historic significance for the University of Leipzig today. They are not only the oldest figurative wall paintings in Leipzig, but one of the largest cycles of mural painting in Saxony. Furthermore, they testify to the preservation of monuments movement in Leipzig around 1900 and to historic conservation techniques. The highly complex conservation process of selected segments and their reinstallation in a newly erected university wing, not free from compromise, took place in the years 2005 to 2011.
