Abstract
Aventurine lacquer. Experiments for its manufacture according to historical sources
The so called aventurine lacquer is a European technique of artistic polychromy, applying golden or silver flakes into a lacquer-surface in order to create a glistening effect. The technique was used for the creation of artistic craftwork pieces and interior design since the middle of the 17th century and intended to create a resemblance to aventurine glass, aventurine minerals, and japan nashiji lacquerware. Due to the high sensitiveness of popular aventurine lacquer, only a small amount of historical objects displaying this technique are preserved to this day. The aim of the seminar thesis, the basis for this paper, was to reproduce a number of selected historical aventurine lacquer recipes dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.
