The re-transfer of the murals of Metnitz Danse Macabre
The detachment of murals was long appreciated as a technically spectacular supreme discipline of conservation, still fueled by the 'profit' of sinopia and preparatory design. Many murals that were detached in the last century are now in a deplorable state and must be re-transported, or even a third timedanse macabre of the pictures. In addition to the usual problems of adhesion of the wall painting to the artificial support, aging phenomena and corresponding optical changes, it is important not to forget the salts concentrated on the surface of the wall painting and transported to the new support in the process of the detachment of the wall painting. The story of the detachment of murals can be described as a history of helplessness versus the causes of damage. The methods of conservation in situ developed after 1966 are not sufficiently known in the professional field.
