Abstract

„By Friction made to shake“
Restoration of a Terpodion by Johann Georg Gröber, Innsbruck c. 1840
An application for a loan resulted in the in-depth occupation with a peculiar keyboard instrument that had become part of the collection of musical instruments of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg in 1962. Previous restoration efforts of the former owner were incomplete. The instrument’s condition, by now deplorable, triggered off intensive conservation efforts focussing on the heavily corroded lead weights of the tone producing sound plates and on the lead flywheel. These components were cleaned and consolidated mechanically and by electrolytic reduction. Completing the work on the wooden box allowed the loan request to be approved.
