Abstract

During a rescue excavation of a settlement at the outskirts of Hildesheim (Hildesheim-Bavenstedt) dating to the Roman Principate remains of the »Bernburg Culture« were discovered. Settlement features and several crouched burials were dug out which include a double burial of two individuals who were killed by arrows. A third individual had been slain by a stone axe. The site is situated outside the actual distribution area of this culture. Its location, the anthropological and archaeological data indicate an attempted conquest of land around Hildesheim by members of the »Bernburg Culture« which was prevented by the local inhabitants.
