Why Does a Plaque at the Espace Tilo Frey Still Mention Louis Agassiz?
Detouring as a Methodological Tool to Reveal Diverting Tactics

Abstract
This essay forms part of my investigation into colonial symbols in public urban spaces in the city of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Focusing on the former Espace Agassiz at the University of Neuchâtel, I examine how public remembrance of Louis Agassiz evolved between 1988 and 2019. The research considers whether this site reflects the contestation of Agassiz’s legacy in light of restitution claims formulated both in Switzerland and the United States. In particular, I analyze the use of Agassiz’s plaque in the university square, interpreting it as an intangible battleground between competing intellectual traditions while also functioning as diversion tactics. In other words, such an object directs attention toward framing restitution claims against Agassiz as attempts to «rewrite history» rather than recognizing them as legitimate historical contributions.
