Arrhythmia. On some aspects of the whole artistic fuss in the Western and Northern Territories

In the years 1945–1981, contrary to the socio-political and technological conditions, new artistic ideas and forms in the Polish Western and Northern Territories (the so-called ‘Recovered Territories’) appeared. The character of this art was its non-conformity with analogous processes in Western art (the eponymous ‘arrhythmia’). The ‘arrythmia’ of artistic creativity also means a lack of reaction to the politically determined caesura. Thanks to the artists’ efforts, many works appeared and many texts about the ‘new art’ were published outside the plans of official cultural institutions, as well as beyond the reach of censorship. This tradition should be fully acknowledged and cherished nowadays.
