Abstract

Sport in the Circle of the Formists and the First Series of "Zwrotnica" Magazine (1919-1923)

The article shows the work of the Formists and the "Zwrotnica" circle in the area of the avant-garde fascinations of the topic of sport in the years of 1919-1923. The subject of analysis here is Swordplay (1919) painted by Leon Chwistek; then sporting activity of Konrad Winkler (fencing) and August Zamoyski (skiing, cycling). The role of sport in the art of the early Polish avant-garde is combined with an article Sport and Art published by Tadeusz Peiper under the pseudonym of Wojciech Dugiel in "Zwrotnica" (1923, No. 5). On the basis of these examples there have been presented changes, which occurred in Polish art under the influence of the aesthetization of sport by the Formists and Peiper.
