Abstract
Figure and angel: Abraham Ostrzega’s sepulchral sculpture and the tradition of imaging in Jewish art
One of the most important factors influencing Jewish art over the centuries was the biblical ban on representing figures, explicitly stated in the Book of Exodus and the Book of Deuteronomy. Abraham Ostrzega’s figurative sepulchral sculpture was revolutionary in the face of the illustrative traditions in Jewish art, although through its eschatological contents it is directly related to the Jewish religion. Based on the texts of the Bible, the Book of Zohar and folk ideas of Polish Jews concerning the sphere of the afterlife, an attempt was made to interpret selected sepulchral sculptures created by Abraham Ostrzega – an artist considered controversial in the prewar Warsaw milieu of orthodoxy.
