Abstract

JACEK WITKOWSKI (University of Wroclaw) / Mediaeval funeral ceremonial of Silesian dukes and its reflection in sepulchral art
The article concerns the little-known problem of the funeral ceremony of the Silesian Piast dukes in the 14th and 15th centuries, as well as its reflections in the Silesian Gothic sepulchral art. The main sources are works of art, especially the miniature depicting the corpse of Henry I the Bearded on a parade bed in the Lubin Codex dated 1353 and its later painting imitations, as well as the tombstone of duke Henry IV Probus from the Holy Cross Collegiate Church in Wroclaw. These iconographic sources were compared with few written sources: probably a medieval description of funeral ceremonies after the death of Henry IV Probus published in the Baroque period and a regulation concerning his own funeral in the last will of Louis I the Fair. They were confronted with historical accounts of funerals of Polish and Hungarian kings, and especially of rulers of the Kingdom of Bohemia.
