Abstract

Transparent coating systems have been in use for corrosion protection of archaeological objects for a long time. Apart from approved acrylic based lacquers, a newly developed coating system based on fatty acid starch esters, has now been examined in a research project. These ester compounds are highly hydrophobic, thermoplastic, clear and colourless polymers. Besides good reversibility, fatty acid starch esters display easy application. After pilot tests on specimens, this method has been tested on archaeological iron objects for the first time.
