Abstract

The new theatres of Gardzienice: experiments with traditional ideas in the eternal pilgrimage of forms

The Gardzienice Theatre is an avant-garde theatre, while at the same time remaining traditional. It draws upon the sources of traditional local borderland cultures. The Theatre discloses in a remarkable manner the relationship between the world of culture and that of nature – of the human individual, the micro- and the macrocosm, and of the transcendental world. This article presents the project to adapt and develop the Gardzienice Theatre, as the location for creative encounters between people of various traditions, cultures, nationalities and religions.The project attempts to adapt in an ideological manner to the ethos of the theatre. Using the language of symbols and archetypes by means of the forms and orders of architecture and urban planning composition, it strives to transmit the ideological values of theatrical initiation into the space of culture and nature.
