Buildings for artistic activities – theatres, opera houses and concert halls: an introduction

The tenth volume of „Studies in modern architecture”, entitled Buildings for artistic activities –theatres, opera houses and concert halls, comprises six studies by authors representing various academic centres in Poland, who share their research and observations on contemporary architecture, while also discussing their own projects, tracing the progress from the idea, through the architectural concept, to the realisation of the structure. The book discusses the circumstances surrounding the creation of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, with the specific participation of the Polish designer Tadeusz Łęski. It presents the unique projects of Tomasz Konior. Experimental solutions for theatrical stages are introduced by means of the examples of Gardzienice, peripatetic theatres (e.g. Reduta, Cricot and others) and spaces adapted for varying requirements. The volume includes analyses in the fields of architecture, art history, theatre studies and literary studies devoted to issues regarding the design of structures for artistic activities, creating spaces and making use of decorations, incorporating multiple functions into existing structures and attaining specific utility values, with particular emphasis on acoustic requirements.
