Abstract

An Early Imperial Period Collared Bead from the Crimea in Urmitz (Lkr. Mayen-Koblenz / DE) in the Central Rhineland
Among the unburnt grave goods of a cremation grave of the Claudian period in the proximity of the military installations of Urmitz an unusual glass bead stands out. This is a collared bead with silver foil, probably originating from the Bosporan Kingdom on the north-eastern Black Sea coast. The stationing of Roman troops here is proven from the Early Imperial Period onwards. The bead could have reached its find-spot perhaps through trading contacts or during troop movements via the Danube and Rhine. Hitherto, however, a decisive piece of evidence is lacking. At present, no direct comparative find for the bead is known from Western Europe.
