Abstract

CIL XIII 7290: a victimarius legionis XXII from Mainz-Kastel?
In his 1520 published work Collectanea antiquitatum, J. Huttich, a humanist from Hesse in the early 16th century, described numerous Roman monuments from Mainz and its vicinity which are unfortunately lost today. One of these monuments, the tombstone CIL XIII 7290 from Mainz-Kastel, has been copied very differently and in some cases incorrectly over the course of time. Of particular interest are the different proposed solutions that refer to the military rank / function of the dedicant, whereby not only the critical examination of the history of its transmission, but also the available sources allow the possibility to identify him as a victimarius legionis XXII or victimarius legati legionis XXII.
