Abstract

A Monument for a God (and Emperor). On the Dating of the So-called Tiberius Pillar from Nijmegen
The so-called Tiberius-Pillar, with its reference to Tiberius, is one of the few stone monuments from the Early Imperial period from the northwest provinces that can be placed within a narrow chronological framework. In combination with its rich pictorial and ornamental decoration, this makes it one of the central monuments of this period. Despite its importance, many questions about the monument have not yet been clarified or even asked. The aim of this short article is to pinpoint the dating of the pillar to the years AD 12–14 and, thus, to put its interpretation on a new foundation.
