Abstract

Ibis-shaped Gold Jugs in the Cult of Isis

In Pompeii and Stabiae, several vessels of identical shape are depicted on wall paintings. Due to the yellow fresco colour in combination with coloured gemstone decoration, they are gold jugs. The Latin vessel name is hydraeum, derived from the Greek ὑδρεῖον. The precious jugs were used in the cult of Isis and were carried on a round tray; they contained water.
