Abstract
Archaeology of the 1st Millennium between Social Responsibility and Scientific Relevance
Traditional early historical archaeology is characterised by a hybrid approach, determined by the interaction of textual and material sources. This foundation has become increasingly shaky in recent decades, necessitating a fundamental update and at the same time opening up space for new directions. Two directions are of particular interest here: the scientific relevance of early historical archaeology and its social responsibility. Both aspects lead to an archaeology of the 1st millennium that takes a constructivist approach and positions itself reflectively and transparently in the society from which it is practised.
