Abstract

In the 1930s in an area of agrarian use close to Etzdorf (Saale-Holzland-Kreis) an assemblage of by now more than 400 lithics was collected from the surface on a space of not more than 15 m². The presentation of the finds considers for the first time fitting fragments, raw material, types of basic shapes, lithic sizes, characteristics of percussion, as well as characteristics of platform remnants and dorsal surfaces. Not later than the 1950s the individuality of the artefacts within the Late Upper Palaeolithic of Central Germnay was emphasised because of the retouched shapes. This is confirmed by the following comparison between Etzdorf and the facies Cepoy-Marsangy in the Paris basin and the find association E in Switzerland the similarity of which to the »Hamburgian« is striking.
