Abstract
Fragments of vessel walls can be successfully attributed to a certain form if evidence of the original vessel content is detectable: wall fragments of amphorae for olives can show patchy discolorations produced by the fruits. The analysed remains of the contents of an amphora from Soller point to a packed milk product. Vessels of as yet unknown provenience and of striking pocked ware contained beer according to a graffito. An increasing number of non-food contents can be documented as well: brushed inscriptions and meanwhile also leftovers of the contents testify to various pigments, and finally even a common housefly has been identified within the waste of amphorae in Cologne.
