Abstract

The bequests of Flóris Rómer, »father of Hungarian archaeology«, include the wax impression of a gem with the presentation of Jupiter Dolichenus in armour with leather straps on a bull turned to the left. He holds a lance with his right and a thunderbolt with his slightly extended left hand. Following the edge around the letters ΛEL (left of the thunderbolt), VΛL (over his head) and FELIX (right of the lance) are visible. The gem was most probably discovered in Transdanubia. Jupiter Dolichenus hardly appears on gems; so far only one example is known which was bought in Gaziantep/TR. The stone shows Jupiter Dolichenus in a Romanised fashion comparable to the votive from Nida-Heddernheim (Stadt Frankfurt a.M.). The surrounding letters tell us the owner’s name Ael(ius) Val(...) Felix. According to engraving, presentation and inscription the gem dates to the 2nd century.
