Abstract

Pottery from early medieval settlements in the Saxon-Slavic area was studied in the context of an archaeometric pilot study concentrating on the contact zone of the Lower Elbe region. The whetted edges of sherds and thin sections of typologically different fragments were microscopically analysed in order to gain information on raw materials and production processes of the vessels. The qualitative analysis shows no significant difference in the technology of the pottery which was classified as Saxon, Slavic or hybrid Slavic. Likewise, there is no regular association between the used raw materials and the vessel types. Finally, following these results both some general hypotheses and research perspectives are presented.
