Abstract

In recent years, a sanctuary in Lienz has come to light which appears to have served as a tribal sanctuary for the Laiances residing in the Lienz basin in the late La Tène period. In the course of the bellum Noricum the sanctuary acquired a transregional focus and came under Roman influence. The entire hill was surrounded with a carefully laid and plastered wall which delimited the holy district. An as yet unique complex of tin votives comes from that time, depicting almost the entire Roman pantheon. These figures, of which more than 500 fragments were found, can be taken as an expression of popular piety at a rural, pagan sanctuary near the municipium Aguntum.
