Abstract

In 2016, a hoard with several yoke connections, chains and tools came to light in the course of an archaeological survey in the hilltop settlement on the Schieferberg in the Upper Rhine valley. The contribution aims firstly to examine the finds typologically but then also to contextualise the discovery regionally and supraregionally, thereby re-assessing the role of the horse in Antiquity once again as well as the function of such depositions of iron objects. Indeed, by comparison with other well researched finds this study allowed for a discussion of different interpretations of these well-known issues in prehistory and the Roman period.
