Abstract

Subject of the study is Katovice Hillfort, located near Strakonice in Southern Bohemia. Although the site was of archaeological interest already in the 19th century, the first detailed survey was conducted in 2016-2017. Processing both older and new finds together with non-destructive surveys and supported by technical and scientific analyses have brought forward new facts about the site, which was settled from the Palaeolithic onwards, and several times after that in Late Prehistory. However, it can be presumed that the site held its greatest importance in the Early Middle Ages, when a large hillfort was built here. The examination of pottery and iron artefacts, animal bones and botanical samples together with dating of the wall of the acropolis to the period between the second half of the 9th century to the first half of the 10th century using radiocarbon, showed new aspects of the lifecycle and development of his Early Medieval hillfort of supraregional importance.
