Abstract

A New Late Migration Period Dove Brooch from Masuria

The so-called dove-shaped brooches are seen as a form that in the 6th-7th centuries was a continuation of the Roman tradition. At that time, they were mainly present in Italy, the eastern part of the Alpine region and in Pannonia. At the same time, there is a surprising concentration of these brooches in Masuria (former East Prussia, now north-eastern Poland), in the cemeteries of the so-called Olsztyn Group. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, a total of twelve specimens, recovered from four cemeteries, were recorded there. Two more specimens were found in recent years. Except for three specimens, all dove-shaped brooches from Masuria had a simple clasp construction (without a spring), indicating they were local products that imitated imported designs.
