Abstract

This contribution assesses the possibility of an internal structure of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes out of architecturally / statically determined or tactical-organisational necessity. The mathematical analysis of the external measurements demonstrates a basic tower size for certain sections, necessary perhaps in terms of required space or affordable construction volume. This way, the Upper Germanic part could be divided in altogether twelve sections. The comparison with other frontiers such as Hadrian’s Wall or the Odenwald-Limes suggests the existence of such basic distribution for the watchtowers. This entails first clear indications on frontier organisation which nevertheless have to be further tested with the help of other parameters.
