Abstract

The First Pictorial Representation of a Roman Lead Tag

On a pillar tombstone in Augsburg one can identify for the first time a pictorial representation of a Roman lead tag. Considering the fact that lead tags as such are known in considerable numbers from the Roman period, but hitherto have in no case been found fastened to an object in situ, the representation offers a new perspective on the question of how the tags were used in which contexts.
