Abstract

Five new situlas illustrate the modest first phase of the middle Rhenish princely graves, among them especially four unaccompanied bronze situlas from an isolated grave group in the eastern Eifel mountain range. The location of four graves of generally older men next to a prominent traffic route already anticipates typical characteristics of younger princely graves. Situlas originated in the West of Upper Italy and began to occur (north of the Alps) in Ha D3. As for their contribution, a concentration not far from the Mosel confluence with the Rhine could be confirmed. As highly standardised imports, the situlas also provide an extended insight into their production techniques. However, the technical characteristics are only bits and pieces for a future analysis of the workshops in Upper Italy as this toreutic tradition did not inspire metal working in the Rhineland.
