Abstract

Development of Settlement and Cultural Landscape in the Neighbourhood of the Heuneburg during the Hallstatt and La Tène Period – First Results

Within the context of a long-term project of the DFG plans for the investigation of the closer surroundings of the late Hallstatt period »Fürstensitz« (princely seat) Heuneburg for the coming twelve years have been devised. Emphasis will first be put on the hilltop settlements within a radius of 20 km of the Heuneburg. Excavations have been carried out on the Alte Burg at Langenenslingen in 2014 and 2015. It turned out that the complete spur was overbuilt artificially. The edge of the plateau had been broadened by erecting numerous stone transoms with loose stone filling in between. The plateau itself had been levelled extensively. The north-eastern end was blocked by massive dry stone walls of up to 10 m height. There are some indications for the function of the Alte Burg as a cult site in the Iron Age. Another excavation aimed to clarify function and chronology of the 1 ha square enclosure adjacent to the large Hallstatt period barrow Hohmichele. The results gave evidence for a late La Tène period Viereckschanze rather than a cult site built in the area of the older Hallstatt period cemetery. La Tène D1 material and features – a well, an oven and pits from a settlement – were discovered. In total there are seven such Viereckschanzen in the surroundings of the Heuneburg. Without a doubt the Hohmichele is part of this late La Tène period settlement landscape.
