Abstract

A Stone Fragment with Hallstatt and La Tène Period Engravings on Both Sides from Brouch (Kt. Grevenmacher / L)

This contribution presents a surface find from Luxembourg which is a fragment of a black siliceous rock boulder engraved with linear figures on its two flat sides. Side A shows a figure composed of a triangle, circle and zigzag lines similar to the schematic presentations of humans of the Kalenderberg group. Side B is decorated with an asymmetric composition of clubs, triskelion and undulating tendrils which is associated with the Waldalgesheim style. The Leibniz-Institut für Neue Materialien in Saarbrücken analysed the stone surface with a scanning electron microscopy and detected abrasion of a gold alloy with an average composition of Au75Ag12Cu13. This high percentage of copper is unusual for Hallstatt and La Tène period gold.
