Abstract

From the acropolis hill to the Danube: new investigations on the Heuneburg (2008-2012)

During the last ten years our understanding of the Late Hallstatt period Heuneburg has undergone fundamental change. While the research of the DFG priority programme »Frühkeltische Fürstensitze« concentrated on the area of the outer ward and the external settlement the acropolis hill proper has moved into the centre of interest since 2008. At the same time sensational discoveries were made on the eastern terrace and in the Danube valley immediately below the Heuneburg which prompted completely new and unexpected questions on aspects such as ritual acts, burial practice and chronology. This contribution presents the first results of five years field research between the acropolis hill and the Danube – reaching from excavation trenches on the plateau up to human skeletal remains on the eastern terrace and the Early La Tène brooches from the Danube.
