Abstract

Many new discoveries have been made by using digital terrain models (DTM): The Milseburg is surrounded by a far more complex and extensive system of ramparts than so far assumed. The whole mountain is affected. Visibility analyses within the fortification show distinctive relations between the positions of the gates. The concept of the main rampart and its three culverts is remarkable: the distance between the gates is such that at a position half way between two gates, the main rampart can still be seen.
