Abstract

An Early Medieval horse burial and a Pannonian belt buckle from Neuenkirchen near Neubrandenburg (Lkr. Mecklenburg-Strelitz)

During a rescue excavation in Neuenkirchen near Neubrandenburg already several years ago the skeleton of a horse (14C-date 685-975 AD) had been unearthed. Directly adjacent to it, early Slavic pottery of the 8th century and a bronze buckle with relief decoration of the second half of the 7th century belonging to the group of so-called Pannonian buckles came to light. Although the find context is unclear it could originally be a horseman’s burial with horse that was to be disturbed later on. Burial rite and costume accessories show relations to the culture of the Avar period on the middle Danube.
