Abstract

A primipilus of legio XVIII from Aquileia

By naming the primipilus Sextus Cloatius an epitaph from the second half of the 1st century BC discovered in Aquileia identifies the hitherto fifth member of the 18th legion known by name. The mentioning of the tribus Maecia and the gentilicium indicates Sextus Cloatius’ origin in Southern Italy. The inscription belongs to an 18th century collection, however, its location of discovery in Aquileia is certain due to the reliable reconstruction of the history of the Cassini collection back to the 20th century.
