Abstract
Private Bathhouses in Medieval Towns – A New Interpretation of Archaeological Features in Regensburg
Public bathhouses played an important role in the everyday life of a medieval city. Archaeological and constructional historic features show the architecture and function of the preserved, mainly Late Medieval buildings, but hitherto no structural evidence for private bathhouses had been known. With an interdisciplinary approach including archival references and literary texts, archaeological features from Regensburg, which had been known for a long time and regarded as manufacturing facilities, have been reinterpreted for the first time as the remains of High-Medieval, private bathhouses added to urban dwellings.
