Abstract

Discoid Blanks with Leafpoints: A Find-spot of the Late Middle Palaeolithic near Albersdorf, Stadt Vilshofen a. d. Donau (Lkr. Passau)

During recent decades, amateur activities have revealed a whole finds province of late Middle Palaeolithic sites attesting the former presence of the last Neanderthals along the Bavarian Danube valley. Leaf points (Blattspitzen, used as hafted lance points or as knives) occur as overarching elements, common to all inventories, though contrasting in different versions of blank production: the case of Albersdorf uniquely attests the use of the discoid concept of blank production in order to convert the blanks into leaf points. Some blanks were originally asymmetrical according to their technical axis, thereafter they were newly aligned to the intended symmetrical axis and accordingly surface shaped.
