Abstract
A »Hellenistic« Gold Earring from Reiden-Brättschällenberg (Ct. Lucerne/CH)
The find of a gold earring from Reiden-Brättschällenberg (Ct. Lucerne/CH) is hitherto unique north of the Alps. Although the piece can be best compared with Hellenistic earrings, a local production cannot be discounted. It was not possible to place the find stratigraphically. The find-spot has provided finds from almost all periods since the Neolithic. Several settlement features could not be dated precisely. However, comparisons with Mediterranean finds indicate a La Tène period dating of the earring. The nature of the find-spot remains unclear, possibly it is a fortified upland settlement which dominated the north-south traffic in the Wigger Valley (Jura/Mittelland-Alpen). The rich finds material and the topographical location point to a special status of the settlement.
