Abstract
A Mill-Axis from Doliche (Şehitkamil, Gaziantep / TR)
During excavations in the centre of the ancient city of Doliche on the Keber Tepe, a millrind was found in a monumental building together with other displaced, iron objects. This mill-axis probably comes from the Roman period and belonged to a gear mill. Gear mills differ from simple mills through a fixed gearbox with two gear-wheels, by which the power supplied is transmitted and the mill’s performance is increased. The development of gear mills probably occurred during the 2nd century AD. Hitherto they have been attested in Germany, England, Romania and Hungary through corresponding millrinds. With the find from Doliche we now have an example from the Eastern Mediterranean. The location of the mill in Doliche cannot yet be established, but one can assume that it was operated within a bakery in the centre of the city.
