Abstract
With the explicit mention of the reading of young adult novels in French lessons at the upper secondary level, the Bavarian curriculum (called LehrplanPLUS) reinforces a new orientation towards current literary works that go beyond the canonised ʼschool reading classics'. After clarifying the understanding of the term ,young adult fiction‘, the question is addressed as to how far the concrete selection of texts and the design of existing school editions take into account the added poetic value of fictional texts in addition to the linguistic and content-related competence goals of foreign language teaching, i.e. it is critically discussed to what extent aesthetic, stylistic and narrative dimensions are taken into account in order to experience the special potential of literary works in contrast to non-fiction texts and thus contribute to the formation and strengthening of aesthetic sensibility.
