The article combines important stages in the evolution of the concept of the classical: from Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve, to Hans-Georg Gadamer, Hans Robert Jauß, Ernst Robert Curtius, T. S. Eliot, Karl Reinhardt, Helmut Kuhn and Helmut Plessner. By discussing the historical dimension of the concept of the classical, the article places the concept of the classical between traditional and innovative form-consciousness.
