Resumen

Focusing on the seriality of flamenco and its ties to regionality, this paper illustrates how Rito y Geografía del Cante, a TV series from the 1970s, circulated a narrative of flamenco as deeply rooted in the Andalusian province and thus shaped the reception of flamenco as an Andalusian identity marker until today. Flamenco culture is serial in the sense that, as an open and never completed art form, it links similar elements updating them again and again, thus the serial concatenation of textual micro-units forms the basis of each flamenco piece. Through the constantly varying repetition of flamenco rituals in this television series, the discourse of the regional origin of flamenco is affirmatively resumed, vis-à-vis the appropriation by the Franco regime: It is precisely the format of television series and certain characteristics of the serial that cause this documentary series to reconstruct flamenco as a regional immaterial cultural heritage.
