Abstract

The brown slip is one of the least investigated techniques of goldsmithry. For the first time this paper describes the variations of the technique and is based upon amongst others newly accessible sources; it discusses the characteristics and history of the materials used; it revises the traditional views on the chronological
and geographical spread of this technique; it describes the history of reception, which started very ate, and provides in a catalogue with 236 numbers an overview of the historical works of brown slip known today, its technical traits, its formative motives and its origins. The conclusion is provided by a comprehensive bibliography which collates the widely scattered published articles on this technique
